Boulder City was built in the 1930s to house Hoover Dam workers and still bans casinos inside the city limits, so it stays a low-rise, walkable small town 30 min from the Las Vegas Strip. Travellers use it as a quiet base for the dam, Lake Mead and the railroad museum, or as a half-day stop between Las Vegas and Arizona.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 15 min end to end. For Hoover Dam, Lake Mead or the railroad museum you need a car, or a booked tour from Las Vegas that stops here. RTC Transit route 221 links downtown with Las Vegas, but there is no public bus to Hoover Dam.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US small town: the real risks are summer heat, desert roads with no shade or signal, and cliff edges at the dam and lake. Lock the car at trailheads and never swim in the Colorado River below the dam.
  • Summer afternoons hit 40 °C+; carry water and do the dam early.
  • Hoover Dam parking fills by mid-morning in peak season; the Arizona side is free but adds a walk.
  • No casinos inside the city limits — the two nearest are outside town on US-93.
  • Cell signal drops in parts of Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
