Puerto Peñasco — Rocky Point to Americans — sits on the Sea of Cortez about 112 km south of the Arizona border, and most visitors arrive by car from Phoenix or Tucson in roughly 3.5 hours. It is a beach-and-seafood town, not a sightseeing city: two main beach strips, a working fish market on the malecón, and boat trips to Bird Island. Two or three nights covers it; a long weekend is the normal shape of a trip.

Getting around

Most visitors drive in and keep the car. Without one, taxis are the main option — flag them on a main street or ask your hotel to call; expect tourist-taxi rates to be higher around Sandy Beach. Microbuses run around town cheaply but are aimed at workers, not visitors. Car rental is limited; book ahead if you need one for a longer stay.

Watch out

Safety

The town itself has stayed calm while other Sonora communities saw more crime; the real risks are driving (Mexican insurance, sand on Highway 3, night roads) and summer heat. Use common sense at bars and keep to main streets after dark.
  • All drivers in Mexico need Mexican auto insurance; US policies are not valid. Buy it before you cross the border.
  • The Lukeville border crossing is open 06:00–00:00 daily (check before you travel).
  • Sand blows onto Highway 3 between El Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Peñasco — slow down on drifts.
  • Do not drive off-road without four-wheel drive and sand-driving experience.
  • Puerto Peñasco keeps the same time as Arizona and does not observe daylight saving — check your phone before booking shuttles.
