San Luis Río Colorado is a 177,000-person border city on the Arizona line, opposite San Luis, Arizona. The Colorado River that named it is now mostly dry — irrigation took it — so the draw is not the river but the desert around it: the Pinacate volcanic field and the dunes of Gran Desierto de Altar, plus the fishing village of Golfo de Santa Clara on the Sea of Cortez, 108 km south. Hotels cluster near the crossing and are basic; most travellers pass through in a night, or use it as a cheap base for the Pinacate and the coast.

Getting around

The city is flat and spread out; taxis and ride-hailing cover the centre cheaply, but you need a car for the Pinacate reserve, the dunes and Golfo de Santa Clara. MEX-2 runs west to Mexicali and east toward Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco.

Watch out

Safety

A working border city, not a resort: the real risks are desert heat, remote roads with no phone signal and the border itself. Keep to lit central streets at night, use taxis after dark, and never head into the Pinacate without water and a full tank.
  • Summer heat is extreme — one of the hottest, driest cities in Mexico; carry water and avoid midday.
  • The Colorado River here is usually dry or a trickle; do not plan around river scenery.
  • The Pinacate reserve is remote desert with no services: go with a full tank, water and a charged phone.
  • Border waits at San Luis can run long at peak times; check the crossing wait before you commit.
  • The region sits on active faults — a 7.2 quake hit in 2010.
