SpringfieldSpringfield, Vermont
Give Springfield half a day or one night as a stop on I-91 between Brattleboro and White River Junction; two nights only if you want the Black River valley at walking pace.
Springfield is a former machine-tool town of about 9,400 people on the Black River, 8 km from the New Hampshire line and right on I-91. Its draw is small and specific: Vermont's oldest one-room schoolhouse, a long-running community theatre, a state craft gallery, and a downtown that is still rebuilding after the precision-industry years. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon; a night here makes sense if you are driving the Connecticut River valley and want a cheaper bed than Woodstock or Manchester.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical answer: sights sit 3–8 km apart and the town has no taxi rank worth relying on. Connecticut River Transit (The Current) runs local buses and links to Bellows Falls, Ludlow, White River Junction and Lebanon, NH — useful if you arrive without a car, but frequency is low, so check the timetable before you commit. Amtrak's Vermonter stops at Bellows Falls (about 25 min south) and Claremont, NH, not in Springfield itself.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances between sights are car distances; the town is not walkable end to end.
- Many restaurants and the theatre run limited days — check hours the same week.
- Winter driving on Route 11 and I-91 means ice and sudden closures.
- Cell coverage is fine in town, patchy on the back roads toward Chester and Ludlow.
