Northfield is a small Minnesota river town of about 20,000 people, 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities, that most travellers use as a half-day or one-night stop on the I-35 corridor. Its draw is a compact historic downtown on the Cannon River, two liberal-arts colleges, and the 1876 bank raid that made the town famous. Two or three hours covers the core; a night lets you eat and drink downtown without driving back in the dark.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. The Highway 3 shopping and hotel strip is 2–3 km from Division Street: drive, bike or use the local dial-a-ride service. A car is the practical way to reach the colleges and the strip.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving, deer on the highway at dusk and unlit riverfront paths after dark.
