Prilep is North Macedonia's tobacco town under a bare hill crowned by the ruins of Marko's Towers, the fortress of the medieval king who became a folk hero. The centre is small and walkable, the bazaar is the country's third-largest, and the surrounding villages and monasteries reward a car. Most travellers pass through between Skopje and Bitola; one night and a full day is enough to see why they should stop.

Getting around

The centre is small and flat: walk everywhere between Čento Square, the Old Bazaar and the bus station. Taxis are cheap for Varoš, the fortress trailhead and the Museum of Tobacco; agree the fare or check the meter. A car helps for Treskavec Monastery, Mariovo villages and the marble quarries.

12th-century monastery on a rock outcrop; the church survived a 2013 fire and keeps 14th–19th century frescoes. No overnight stays since the fire.

Watch out

Safety

Prilep is a quiet, low-crime town and walking the centre at night is normal. The real risks are the unshaded, uneven fortress trail, loose ruins at the mosque and fortress, and winter ice on the Varoš paths.
  • The Marko's Towers trail has no shade and no water points: start early in summer and carry at least 1.5 L per person.
  • The fortress ruins are unprotected with loose stone and drops; watch children and wear shoes with grip.
  • The Čarši Mosque is a burnt ruin open to trespass; do not climb on unstable walls.
  • Some Varoš churches are locked outside service times; ask at the monastery or a nearby house for the key.
  • Bus and train timetables to Skopje and Bitola change with the season: confirm the day before you travel.
