Georgetown is the largest community in Halton Hills, on the Credit River about 60 km west of Toronto, and it grew around George Kennedy's 1820s mills. The walkable core is small: a heritage Main Street, a public garden on the old Dominion Seed House site, and the Niagara Escarpment and Bruce Trail minutes away. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the GO Kitchener line or as a quiet bed between Toronto and Guelph.

Getting around

There is no local bus. The core is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end; a car is needed for the Bruce Trail, Fallbrook and the motels on Highway 7. GO and Via trains stop at the heritage station on Queen Street, and GO buses use the platform north of the tracks.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are winter ice on sidewalks and trails, deer and cyclists on the escarpment roads, and the one-lane McNab underpass where cars and pedestrians share the space.
  • GO Kitchener-line trains are limited on weekends and evenings: check the timetable before you plan a day around the train.
  • The McNab Street underpass under the railway is one lane wide and shared with pedestrians: cars yield, and it floods or ices in bad weather.
  • The station building is unstaffed and its interior is often locked: buy or tap your fare at the machines outside.
  • Distances between the downtown, the trailheads and the highway motels are longer than they look: without a car, plan around the train and Main Street.
