ShorzhaՇորժա (now Shoghakat)
Go for a quiet half-day on the eastern shore: walk the peninsula tip (about 1.5 h return), swim off the rocks, and skip it entirely on weekends in July–August when Yerevan day-trippers fill the few beaches; there is no entry fee and no gate.

- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
- Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
- Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.

Shorzha is a village and a low green peninsula on the far eastern shore of Lake Sevan, in the protected Sevan National Park. The party shore is opposite, around the Kghzi peninsula near Sevan town; this side is where Armenians go for silence, cold water and unfenced walking over rolling hills. There is no ticket booth, no visitor centre and no marked trail network — you walk where the ground allows, you swim where the shore is flat, and you carry out everything. The Azerbaijan border runs close to the east, so do not walk east past the last ridge without checking a map.

Why go
- The quiet side of Lake Sevan: no boardwalk, no music, few people even in August.
- A short walk to the tip of the peninsula gives open water views both ways and flat rocks to swim from.
- Unfenced hills above the village for an hour or a full day of walking, with wildflowers from April.
- Cheap and simple: no entry fee, camping allowed on the shore, and a train line that reaches the village.

Park rules
- No entry fee or gate
- You walk in freely; there is nothing to buy and no opening hours.
- Border
- Do not walk east toward Azerbaijan; the border is close and patrolled. Check your government's travel advice first.
- Camping
- Allowed on the shore and hills, but this is a protected national park area: no fires, no cutting wood, carry out all rubbish.
- Swimming
- No lifeguards and no marked swimming areas; the water is cold and the bottom is uneven.
- Litter and glass
- Take bottles away; broken glass on the shore is the main local complaint (check).

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The shore road and the first stretch of the peninsula are flat and reachable by car, with short walks from the verge.
- The peninsula tip and the hills are grass and rock with no path surface; not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- This is protected national park land: no fires, no wood cutting, no leaving rubbish.
- Use the few guesthouses and village shops so money stays in Shorzha.
- Keep to the shore and existing tracks in the meadows; spring flowers do not recover from trampling.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Shorzha?
Nothing. There is no gate, ticket or opening time — you walk in from the village road or the station. You pay only for transport, food and lodging, and camping on the shore is free.
What are the best hikes in Shorzha?
Two stand out: the flat walk to the tip of the peninsula (about 1.5–2 hours return, with swimming at the end) and the unfenced meadow hills above the village (2–4 hours, lake views, no signs). Both are unmarked, so carry a map and stay west of the border ridge.
When is the best time to visit Shorzha?
June to September for swimming, with September the sweet spot for warm water and fewer people. April, May and October are better for walking. Most lodging closes from November to March.
Can I get there without a car?
Yes, but it is slow. A summer train runs from Yerevan to Shorzha station, and taxis from Sevan town or Yerevan will take you. Public buses to this shore are infrequent.
Can I camp at Shorzha?
Yes, camping on the shore and hills is allowed and free. There are no facilities, no fires are permitted in this protected area, and you must carry out all rubbish.
Is it safe to walk east from Shorzha?
No. The Azerbaijan border lies close to the east. Stay on the village side of the last ridge, do not photograph toward the border, and check your own government's travel advice before you go.
