Tobermory is the main village on Mull and the island's obvious base: about 1,000 people, a painted seafront, a distillery and most of the beds and food. Two nights covers the village and one island day; three nights if you want Iona or the north coast without rushing. Come May–September for ferries and open attractions; winter is quiet, wet and partly shut.

Getting around

The village is walkable, but the hill from the seafront to the upper hotels is steep. Bus 95/495 meets ferries at Craignure and runs to Tobermory; bus 494 goes to Dervaig and Calgary. A car makes the rest of Mull far easier. Taxis are based in the village for point-to-point trips and tours.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, single-track roads and patchy phone signal. Tell someone your route if you walk the cliffs or hills.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on Mull and there is no 5G; download maps and tickets before you travel.
  • Single-track roads north of Salen need passing places: pull in and let faster traffic by.
  • Many restaurants and attractions close or cut hours from November to March.
  • Book ferry and accommodation ahead for July and August, and for the Highland Games.
