Kingstown

Saint Vincent was known to its first inhabitants as Hairouna, a name usually translated as the land of the blessed. The Kalinago, also called Island Caribs, lived on the island and farmed, fished and travelled the Caribbean in large canoes. Over time a second community grew: the Garifuna, people of mixed Kalinago and African descent, who took shelter on the island after shipwrecks and escapes from slavery and who became known to the British as the Black Caribs.

Europeans wanted the island for its fertile land. France and Britain both claimed it, and for decades a treaty left it to the Caribs, but settlers and planters kept arriving. In 1763 the Treaty of Paris gave Britain control, and a series of wars followed as the British pushed onto Carib land. The struggle came to a head in the Second Carib War, which ended in 1797 with the defeat of the Garifuna, whose leader Joseph Chatoyer had been killed in 1795, and the deportation of thousands of them, first to the small island of Balliceaux and then to Roatán, off Honduras. Their descendants now live in Central America, and Garifuna culture is recognised by UNESCO.

Sugar and later arrowroot and bananas defined the plantation economy, run with enslaved African labour. Slavery was abolished in 1834, and the decades after emancipation were hard, with poverty, migration and a natural disaster or two, including a volcanic eruption in 1902 that killed well over a thousand people in the north. The island moved gradually toward self-rule and became independent within the Commonwealth on 27 October 1979.

Kingstown itself began as a small settlement on the south-west coast and grew as the colonial port and administrative centre. The Botanic Gardens date from 1765, Fort Charlotte from 1806 and the two cathedrals from the nineteenth century. The town has stayed compact and low-rise, and its pace follows the ferries, the market and the calendar of church and carnival.

Independence Day is still marked each 27 October with parades and school events, and the memory of the Carib Wars is part of national identity. The country's national hero is Chief Joseph Chatoyer, and a monument to him stands at Dorsetshire Hill above the town. Reading a short history before you go, and looking at the displays at Fort Charlotte, makes the streets easier to understand.

The Botanic Gardens at the northern edge of Kingstown were founded in 1765 by the British governor, and they are often described as the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The gardens were a working laboratory: officials imported plants from around the world to test which could be grown as crops on the island, including cinnamon, mango, nutmeg and cocoa.

The most famous introduction is breadfruit. In 1793 Captain William Bligh, the same officer whose crew mutinied on HMS Bounty in 1789, returned to the Caribbean on a second voyage aboard HMS Providence with hundreds of breadfruit plants from Tahiti. He delivered some to Saint Vincent and some to Jamaica. The idea was to grow a cheap, starchy food to feed enslaved workers on the plantations. The workers did not take to it at first, but breadfruit grew to become a national staple, and a descendant of a tree from that voyage still stands in the gardens.

The gardens hold more than history. Old mahogany, cannonball and sausage trees give deep shade, and there are palms, orchids and a small collection of tropical fruit. An aviary shelters the Saint Vincent parrot, the national bird, a bright and endangered species found in the island's forests. A stone carved by the Carib peoples, with petroglyphs, is kept on site, and there are ruins from earlier military use.

Practical points make the visit easier. Go early, ideally before 10:00, when the air is cool and the birds are active. Wear shoes for uneven paths, bring water, and ask at the gate about guides, which are useful for the trees and the aviary. Some paths are steep or slippery after rain, and the gardens can close for maintenance or after storms, so check before you go.

Breadfruit remains the plant to remember. Roasted over a fire until the skin chars, it is peeled and eaten with fried jackfish as the national dish. When you sit down to a plate, you are tasting a plant that arrived in 1793 for reasons of empire and became a symbol of the island.

Kingstown is compact enough to see on foot, and its layout tells its story. The waterfront, Bay Street, is the working front: the ferry terminal at one end, the cruise pier, small boats and the market. Inland, a block or two up the slope, are the churches and the government buildings, and beyond them the old residential streets climb the hillside. Fort Charlotte, on a hill to the west, looks down on the whole town.

The market is the heart of daily life. It sells fruit, vegetables, roots, fish and spices, with stalls spilling onto the pavement on Saturdays. Farmers and sellers come from all over the island, and a visit shows you what grows here: breadfruit, plantains, dasheen, sweet potato, soursop, mangoes and hot peppers. Take small notes, greet the sellers, and ask before photographing.

The two cathedrals are close together and very different. St George's Cathedral, the Anglican church, is a Georgian building of the 1820s, with a pale, cool interior, stained glass and memorials to colonial officials. St Mary's Cathedral, the Catholic church, is a much larger building that grew over more than a century and mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Moorish elements. Both are open in daytime and both are places of worship, so dress and behave accordingly.

Fort Charlotte, completed in 1806 and named after Queen Charlotte, sits on a ridge about 200 metres above the sea. Its guns face inland as well as toward the sea, a reminder that the British feared attack from the island's own people. Inside are old barracks, cannon and displays on the island's history. The view over Kingstown, the harbour and the Grenadines on a clear day is the best in town.

The rhythm is practical. Start early, keep the middle of the day for the cathedrals and lunch, and be on the ferry or in a taxi by late afternoon. Sunday is quiet and many places are closed, so plan around it. Cruise-ship days bring crowds to Bay Street and longer hours to shops.

The Grenadines are a chain of more than thirty small islands and cays running south from Saint Vincent toward Grenada. Bequia, the largest, is about an hour by ferry from Kingstown. Beyond it lie Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island and the Tobago Cays, a marine park of reefs, turtles and shallow lagoons that draws sailors and snorkellers from around the world.

Kingstown is the main port. The ferry terminal on Bay Street is where passenger boats leave for Bequia and, on other services, to Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. Timetables change with the season and the weather, so buy tickets the day before and check the last sailing back. Rough seas can delay or cancel a crossing, and a flight-day plan should never depend on a tight connection.

Bequia is the easiest first stop. Port Elizabeth, the harbour town, has a seafront walk, small restaurants, a market and a sailing tradition of building wooden boats. Beaches such as Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay are a short taxi ride away. A day trip works, but a night lets you enjoy the evening light on the harbour.

The southern islands are more exclusive and more exposed to weather. Mustique is a private island known for villas and celebrity guests, with limited public access. Union Island and Canouan have small airports and resorts. In July 2024 Hurricane Beryl caused severe damage on Union Island and Canouan, and recovery has been a long process, so check current conditions and ferry status before you plan a trip south.

Many visitors combine the Grenadines with a few days in Kingstown, ending in a resort or on a yacht. A useful plan is to spend a night or two in Kingstown or Villa, take the ferry to Bequia for a night or two, and return to the mainland the day before an international flight, allowing a full buffer for the road to Argyle.

Vincentian food blends African, Indigenous, Indian and European influences and depends on what grows and swims nearby. The national dish is roasted breadfruit with fried jackfish. The breadfruit is charred over an open fire, peeled and sliced, and served with small fish fried whole, sometimes with a sauce of onions and peppers. It is simple and filling, and a good example of how a colonial-era crop became a local favourite.

Other staples include dasheen and sweet potato, boiled or fried plantain, dumplings and callaloo soup, a thick green soup made from dasheen leaves, sometimes with crab or salted meat. Roti, a soft flatbread wrapped around a curry filling, arrived with Indian workers and is a fast lunch at counters in town. Fresh fish, from tuna to mahi-mahi, and lobster in season are cooked simply and priced by weight.

The bakeries are worth a stop. Bakes, a fried or baked bread eaten with cheese or fish, and fried jacks are breakfast favourites. Coconut rolls, tarts and sweet bread with coconut and spice are afternoon treats. Arrowroot, once the island's leading export, still appears in biscuits and starch, and the island is proud of its cassava, yams and ground provisions.

To drink there are fresh juices such as soursop, passion fruit and sorrel, and the local beer, Hairoun, which takes its name from the island's old name. Rum has a strong place: Sunset, produced on the island, is a very strong spirit sold in small bottles and used in punches. Drink it slowly and stay hydrated.

A day in Kingstown can follow the food: bakes or a coconut roll and coffee at a bakery in the morning, a market walk with fruit, a plate of breadfruit and jackfish at lunch, a roti before a ferry, and a beer at Villa in the evening. Carry small notes, ask prices before ordering fish by weight, and remember that many places close on Sunday.

Saint Vincent is a volcanic island, and its highest point, La Soufrière, rises to about 1,200 metres in the north. The volcano has erupted several times: in 1718, 1812, 1902, 1979 and, most recently, in April 2021. The 1902 eruption killed well over a thousand people in the north of the island. The 1979 eruption, on the eve of independence, caused evacuations but no deaths. In 2021 an explosive eruption forced the evacuation of some 16,000 people, and ash blanketed Kingstown and the south. The town cleaned up and reopened within weeks.

Today the volcano is monitored, and the danger zone is in the north. Visitors can see it from the sea and on some guided routes, but access to the crater has been restricted, and the trail rules have changed. Check current advice before you plan a hike, go with a certified guide, and do not treat old photographs or reviews as a guide to current conditions.

Weather is the other force. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. The island lies south of the main storm track, but it has been hit, and the Grenadines took a severe blow from Hurricane Beryl in July 2024. Ferries and flights stop in bad weather. If you travel between June and November, buy insurance that covers storms and cancellation, keep your dates flexible and follow local advice.

Daily weather is warm and humid year-round, with daytime highs around 30 to 31 degrees Celsius and cooling trade-wind breezes. The dry season, from January to April, is the sunniest and busiest. The wet season brings heavy showers, higher humidity and flooded roads. In every season, the sun is strong and the sensible pattern is outdoors in the morning, shade or a ferry breeze at midday, and a swim or a drink later.

The island's landscape reflects this activity. Black sand beaches on the leeward coast come from volcanic rock, the hillsides are steep and green, and rivers cut through ash-rich soil. A drive along the leeward coast to Layou, Barrouallie and Wallilabou, where parts of a well-known pirate film were shot, shows the shape of the island in a morning.
