Bella Bella is a Heiltsuk village of about 1,400 people on Campbell Island, on British Columbia's Central Coast. There is no road in: you arrive by plane (ZEL) or by BC Ferries. It is a base for Great Bear Rainforest fishing and wildlife trips, not a sightseeing town. Two nights is enough unless you are on a lodge package.

Getting around

On foot: the village is about a 10-minute walk end to end and 15 minutes to the airport. A passenger ferry runs between Bella Bella and Shearwater roughly every 1–1.5 hours, about 15 minutes each way, C$10 one way for visitors and C$5 return for local passengers (under-16s free with an adult). Two taxis meet incoming flights. Water taxis and charters run to the surrounding inlets.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, cold water and isolation. Flights and ferries cancel in winter storms, so carry a buffer day and tell someone your plan before heading out on the water.
  • No road access: everything arrives by air or sea, and weather cancels flights.
  • Ferries run year-round but not daily, and less often outside summer: check the schedule before booking anything else.
  • Book beds and fishing packages months ahead in summer; capacity is tiny.
  • Cell and data coverage is limited outside the village; download offline maps.
  • Triquet Island is an archaeological site and may not be open to visitors: ask locally, do not land uninvited.
