Give Dunvegan one night, two at most: the castle and gardens are the draw, and a car is needed for the lighthouse and the Maidens.
Dunvegan is a small village on the west of Skye, a mile from its castle, the seat of Clan MacLeod for eight centuries. Most visitors come for the castle and gardens, then use the village as a base for the Duirinish peninsula and the walk to MacLeod's Maidens. Without a car you are limited to the castle, the village and the bus to Portree.

Getting around
The castle and village are a mile apart, with a road and a walking track between. A car is needed for the lighthouse road, Coral Beach and the start of the Maidens hike. Stagecoach bus 56 runs 3–5 times Monday–Saturday from Portree via Skeabost and Edinbane, about 50 min, with a couple of services continuing west to Colbost and Glendale.

Safety
- Castle and gardens open April to mid-October only: outside that window there is little to see here.
- Many B&Bs and the pods have a two-night minimum, and one hotel asks for three nights in season.
- Mobile signal is basic: O2 and Three give a weak call signal, EE and Vodafone give 4G, and there is no 5G.
- Midges are worst on still, damp evenings from June to August: bring repellent for the coast path.
- Single-track roads on the peninsula have passing places: pull in and let locals past.
