Harrodsburg is a small Bluegrass town built around two things: Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a restored 1800s Shaker community 25 minutes northeast, and Old Fort Harrod, a replica of the 1775 settlement that made this the first permanent English town west of the Alleghenies. Both are half-day visits. Almost everyone arrives by car, and a car is the only practical way to move between them.

Safety

Very low street crime for a US small town; the real risks are driving the two-lane US-127 and US-68 corridors at night, deer on the road, and summer heat on exposed fort and trail sites. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads.
  • No train or bus serves Harrodsburg: without a car you are stuck.
  • Rideshare coverage is patchy, especially after dark and out at Shaker Village.
  • Old Fort Harrod runs shorter winter hours and lower winter prices — check before a cold-month trip.
  • The Dixie Belle riverboat runs a seasonal schedule, roughly late April to late October: confirm sailing days before you build a day around it.
  • Distances between town, the village and the lake are longer than they look on a map.
