Clermont-Ferrand is the capital of Auvergne, 3 h 30 min by train from Paris, built from black volcanic rock and ringed by extinct volcanoes. It is a two-night city: the old town and cathedral fill a day, and the Puy-de-Dôme or Vulcania fills another. Michelin's home town also has the best-value food in central France.

One tram line (A) runs north–south through the centre to La Pardieu station; buses fill the gaps but thin out at weekends. A single ticket is €1.60 and valid for one hour; a 10-trip carnet is €15.00. Most of the centre is walkable in under 30 min.

Safety

A calm, safe city by day and night; the real risks are the summer heat, weekend bus gaps and the cold, changeable weather on the volcanoes.
  • Buses are limited on Saturdays and Sundays: check times before relying on them.
  • The summer bus to the Puy-de-Dôme does not appear in standard timetables: confirm the season and departure point locally.
  • Vulcania's shuttle must be reserved up to 48 h ahead outside the summer school holidays.
  • The Puy-de-Dôme summit is exposed and much colder than the city: take a layer even in July.
