Taynuilt is a village of about 800 people on the south shore of Loch Etive in Argyll, on the West Highland Line between Glasgow and Oban. It was a ferry crossing for centuries until the ferry closed in 1966. The draw is industrial history: an 18th-century ironworks at Bonawe and a pumped-storage power station hollowed out of Ben Cruachan. Sights are spread along the A85, so a car turns a stopover into a full day.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village. The real risks are single-track roads with passing places, wet walking paths, midges and patchy phone signal: tell someone your route before hill walks.
  • Taynuilt station has no ticket office or machines: buy on board if you start here.
  • Bonawe Ironworks interiors and Kilchurn Castle are closed; grounds and exterior only.
  • Cruachan tours run weekdays only and stop in winter: check before travelling.
  • Mobile signal is patchy along the A85; 5G has not reached the area.
  • Midges are bad near lochs on still summer evenings.
