Rio Lagartos is a fishing village on the north Yucatán coast, about 2.5 h by car from Mérida and 3 h from Cancún. It exists for one thing: the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a 227,000-hectare mangrove and lagoon system with hundreds of bird species, flamingo colonies and crocodiles. Las Coloradas, the pink salt pools, are 20–25 km east. One full day covers a dawn boat tour and the pools; two nights let you add a beach afternoon and a second tour at a different tide.

Getting around

The town is a few streets in a cone shape; everything is walkable in under 10 minutes. For the reserve and Las Coloradas you need a boat or a car — boats leave from the docks on the malecón, and the road east to Las Coloradas is paved. No local bus service inside town.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are sun, mosquitoes, boat trips without a fixed price and unlit roads at night. Use 911 for emergencies and 078 for tourist help.
  • Agree the boat price, route and duration before boarding; it is per boat, not per person, and a tip at the end is normal.
  • Las Coloradas is an active salt works: stay on the marked paths and check whether swimming is allowed before you go in.
  • Cell signal drops to 3G or nothing inside the reserve; download maps and your booking details first.
  • Mosquitoes are heavy around the mangroves at dawn and dusk — repellent and long sleeves help.
  • Bring cash: ATMs are scarce and card acceptance is limited outside the larger hotels.
