Kent is a college town of about 29,000 on the Cuyahoga River, 40 minutes south of Cleveland and 20 minutes east of Akron. It is a Kent State University town first: the May 4, 1970 site, a fashion museum, a hearing-aid museum and a walkable downtown strip. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop inside a Northeast Ohio trip, not a destination on its own.

Getting around

Downtown and campus are walkable and linked by the Lester Lefton Esplanade. PARTA buses cover Kent and Portage County, with the Kent Central Gateway as the hub. Bikes work well: the Portage Hike and Bike Trail runs from John Brown Tannery Park toward Ravenna, and Kent State runs a dockless rental fleet.

Safety

Kent is a low-risk college town; the real issues are winter ice, unlit paths after dark and event-night crowds downtown. Standard US precautions apply.
  • A car helps: sights are spread between downtown, campus and the stadium, and sidewalks do not reach everywhere.
  • Football and event days fill hotels and roads near campus; book ahead.
  • Winter brings snow and ice on pavements from December to March.
