Elsinore (Helsingør) is a 45-minute coastal train ride from Copenhagen and the closest Danish city to Sweden, 5 km across the Øresund strait. Kronborg castle, a UNESCO site and the setting of Hamlet, anchors a compact old centre of merchant houses, a maritime museum and a harbour that still runs ferries to Helsingborg. Most travellers see it as a day trip; one night buys you the castle without crowds and the festival in August.

Getting around

Walk. Nearly everything of interest sits between the station and Kronborg, 15 minutes apart. Local buses and the Lille Nord and Hornbækbanen railways serve the outskirts and the technical museum; the ferry terminal connects directly to the station.

Watch out

Safety

Elsinore is a low-risk town; the real issues are icy pavements in winter, bikes on shared paths and the castle's early winter closing times.
  • Kronborg closes on Mondays from October to March and shuts at 16:00; last entry is earlier than closing time.
  • Carry ID for the Sweden ferry; there are border checks on some crossings.
  • The harbourfront around the old shipyard has had long construction phases: check what is fenced off.
