Glossop is a former cotton town of about 18,000 people at the northwest edge of the Peak District, 30 minutes by train from Manchester Piccadilly. Its draw is access, not sights: the Longdendale Trail, Old Glossop and the Bleaklow slopes start from the town, and the Snake and Woodhead passes begin here. Most travellers use it as a cheap, quiet base for walking or as a stop between Manchester and the Hope Valley.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Trains run to Manchester Piccadilly roughly every 30 minutes, seven days a week, about 30 minutes. Buses (High Peak 61 to Hayfield, New Mills and Buxton; Stagecoach 237 to Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester) cover the valleys. A car helps for the passes and the upper Peak District; without one you are limited to the rail line and the 61.

Safety

A low-crime commuter town; the real risks are on the hills — fast weather changes, boggy ground on Bleaklow and unlit lanes after dark. Tell someone your route and carry a map.
  • The A57 Snake Pass and A628 Woodhead Pass close in snow and high winds; check before driving in winter.
  • Some bus services run a very limited frequency, especially evenings and Sundays: check times before relying on them.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the moors and in the Longdendale valley.
  • Peak District weather changes fast; carry a waterproof and a paper map, as phone coverage fails on Bleaklow.
