The Boroughs are three suburban towns — Westborough, Northborough and Southborough — strung along I-495 and Route 9 in Central Massachusetts, about 45,000 people in total. They are a business-travel and passing-through area: corporate offices, strip malls, golf courses and reservoirs, with a small historic centre in Westborough. There is no airport and no station within walking distance of a hotel or an attraction, so a car decides everything here.

Getting around

A car is required. I-495 runs north–south with exits for all three towns, I-90 (Mass Pike) meets it in Westborough, and Route 9 runs east–west through Southborough and Westborough. MBTA Commuter Rail stops at Westborough and Cordaville (Southborough), but neither station is within walking distance of hotels or sights — arrange a pickup. Traffic on Route 9 and I-495 is heavy at most times and stops at rush hour.

Safety

Low street-crime risk; the real hazards are Route 9 and I-495 traffic, winter ice on unlit trails, and deer on back roads at dusk. Standard US advice applies: 911 for anything urgent.
  • No airport in the area: plan on BOS or PVD, about 1 h each.
  • Commuter-rail stations are not walkable to anything; do not book a hotel on the assumption you can walk from the train.
  • Route 9 and I-495 jam badly at rush hour — build 20–30 min of slack.
  • Farm stands and pick-your-own are seasonal; check dates before driving out.
  • Some trails and reservoir access have resident-only rules or permit requirements — check before you go.
