Bantry sits at the head of a 35 km bay where three Cork peninsulas meet, so it works as a base rather than a stop: sleep here, drive Sheep's Head one day and Beara the next. The town itself is a square, a market, a big house and gardens, and a ferry to Whiddy Island. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night only makes sense as a break on the Cork–Kerry road.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see the peninsulas: Sheep's Head is a loop of narrow coast and ridge roads, and Beara and Mizen Head need the same. In town everything is walkable in 10 minutes. Bus Éireann 236 links Cork (2 h) with Bantry and continues to Glengarriff and Castletownbere; bus 270 comes from Killarney via Kenmare; Local Link 232 runs along Sheep's Head to Ahakista and Kilcrohane. O'Donovans on Market Street hires and repairs bikes. The Whiddy Island ferry takes foot passengers only, 15 min from the pier 500 m west of town.

Safety

Bantry is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are single-track peninsula roads, fast Atlantic weather and cold water at the coast: drive in daylight and tell someone your route on the trails.
  • Peninsula roads are single-track with passing places and no lighting: drive them in daylight and pull in for oncoming cars.
  • Buses serve the town, not the coast roads or trailheads — do not plan a car-free peninsula day.
  • Many B&Bs, cafés and the campsite close outside the Easter–October season; check before booking a winter trip.
  • The Local Link bus from Skibbereen must be booked ahead by phone.
  • Atlantic weather changes fast: bring a waterproof layer even in July.
