Vlaardingen is a former herring port on the Nieuwe Maas, 20–30 minutes from Rotterdam on metro lines A and B. The old harbour, the museum and the Broekpolder are the draw; most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Rotterdam or Schiedam rather than a destination in itself.

Metro lines A and B stop at Vlaardingen West, Centrum and Oost; line A runs only at peak hours, otherwise change at Schiedam Centrum. Tram 24 serves the north. The centre is walkable; rent a bike for the Broekpolder.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, safe town by Dutch standards. The real risks are wet cobbles on the harbour quays, bikes on the cycle paths, and dark unlit stretches of the Broekpolder after sunset.
  • Line A does not run to Vlaardingen outside peak hours: check the RET timetable before you travel.
  • Masamuda opens Sundays only, 12:00–16:00, and is volunteer-run: confirm before you walk out.
  • Some harbour-side restaurants have no posted prices: ask before you sit.
