Morden is a town of about 8,600 people in Central Manitoba, 126 km southwest of Winnipeg on Highway 3, roughly 1 h 30 min by car. It is home to the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre and sits at the centre of a Mennonite farming belt shared with Winkler, 13 km east. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 15-minute drive, so a car is the practical way in. One day covers the core; a second night buys you the Pembina Valley and the border country.

Safety

Morden is a small prairie town and generally quiet. The main practical risks are winter driving on Highway 3 and wildlife on the road at dusk: check the forecast, fill the tank and carry a charged phone before long drives.
  • Winter runs from November to March with highs well below freezing and wind chill: check the forecast before a prairie drive.
  • The fossil centre sits in the lower level of the Morden Recreation Centre, not on the main street: look for the rec-centre entrance.
  • Some museums and the arts centre keep short seasonal hours and close on Mondays: check before you drive out.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads toward the Pembina Valley.
