Trumansburg is a one-mile village on NY-96 between Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, about 10 minutes from Ithaca. There are no hotels left, only B&Bs, so it works as a calm base for Taughannock Falls State Park and the Cayuga Lake wine and cider strip, or as a half-day stop on the way to Geneva and Seneca Falls. Most travellers see the falls and the Main Street blocks in a few hours.

Getting around

The village is about a mile across and the downtown is a few blocks, so you walk it. Street parking is normally free and easy except during events. For Taughannock Falls, the lake and Ithaca you need a car, bike or the TCAT route 21 bus, which runs along Main St to Ithaca and Cornell with good morning and evening service and sparse midday service. TCAT buses carry bike racks, so you can ride downhill to Ithaca and bus back.

Safety

A small, low-crime village; the real risks are winter ice on the gorge trails, deer on NY-96 at dusk and thin late-night transport back from Ithaca.
  • No hotels or motels in the village: B&Bs only, and they fill for Grassroots Festival and the Fair.
  • TCAT route 21 is thin outside commute hours; check the last bus before you plan an evening in Ithaca.
  • Taughannock Falls trails and the gorge can close after heavy rain or ice; check park status before driving over.
  • Summer seasonal bus service to the falls does not run year-round.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the ridge roads and in the national forest.
