Newport (Trefdraeth) is a small north Pembrokeshire town under Carningli Mountain, between Fishguard and Cardigan on the A487. It has a Norman castle mound, a harbour at Parrog, two beaches within walking distance and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path running through. There is no railway station: you arrive by car or by bus 412 from Fishguard or Cardigan. Two nights suits walkers; one night is enough if you are driving the coast and only want the town.

Getting around

The town is walkable: Market Street to Parrog is about 10–15 min on foot, and Newport Sands is a further 15–20 min. For everything else you need a car or the Richards Bros coastal buses; the coast services run in summer only, so check the timetable before you rely on them.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the sea and the weather. Swim only between lifeguards in season, keep back from cliff edges, and carry a waterproof and a charged phone on the coast path.
  • No railway station: the nearest is Fishguard Harbour, then bus 412.
  • Coastal buses are seasonal and thin on Sundays; do not plan a walk around a bus you have not checked.
  • Parking in the centre is limited in summer; use the Parrog or beach car parks.
  • The coast path here is exposed: wind, rain and cliff edges, and mobile signal drops in places.
  • Many cafés and pubs close early out of season, and some shut for winter weeks.
