Dunsmuir is a town of about 1,650 people in Siskiyou County, sitting where the Sacramento River cuts through the Shasta Cascades. It grew as a railroad service stop on the steep grade north of town, and trains still run through it daily. Almost everything worth doing is within a 15-minute walk of Dunsmuir Avenue, plus one waterfall hike and a few river spots. One night covers the town; add a second for fishing, the botanical gardens or a slow river day.

Getting around

Walk. Downtown is about 10 minutes end to end and the river, park and gardens are within 20 minutes on foot. A car is needed for Mossbrae Falls trailhead, Castle Crags and anything outside town; I-5 is the only fast road. Amtrak's Coast Starlight stops at Dunsmuir station (5750 Sacramento Ave) in the middle of the night in both directions, and the county Stage bus links Dunsmuir with other Siskiyou County towns.

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are the railroad line at Mossbrae Falls, summer wildfire smoke, winter ice on I-5 and cold river water. Violent crime is rare.
  • The Amtrak stop is unstaffed and trains call around 00:35 southbound and 05:04 northbound; delays are common — do not plan a tight connection.
  • Mossbrae Falls is reached by walking along an active railroad line; this is trespassing on railroad property and trains cannot stop quickly. Check current access rules before you go.
  • Summer wildfire smoke in the Sacramento River canyon can cancel the view and the hike; check air quality before committing.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the canyon and on side roads.
  • Winter brings snow and ice on I-5 over the Siskiyou and Sacramento River grades; carry chains in season.
