Jérémie

Jérémie is a 2–3 day detour for travellers who want to see a quiet, isolated Haitian city with literary history and a ruined fort. Not a stop on a loop; you go here and back.

Jérémie, the 'city of poets', sits on the Grande-Anse River in southern Haiti, cut off from the rest of the country by bad roads and infrequent transport. The main draws are the ruined Fort Marfranc, the red-walled Saint Louis Cathedral (damaged in 2021), and the slow pace of a provincial town. Most visitors come for 2–3 days, then return the same way they arrived.

Watch out

Safety

Jérémie is calmer than Port-au-Prince, but the same precautions apply: avoid walking alone after dark, keep valuables out of sight, and travel with a local contact if possible. The bigger risk is the road condition and the isolation — medical evacuation is difficult.
  • Roads to Jérémie are poor; the trip from Port-au-Prince can take 6–8 hours by car, longer in rain.
  • Fort Marfranc is almost completely destroyed; go for the history and the view, not for a preserved site.
  • The cathedral roof collapsed in the 2021 earthquake; the building is still standing but interior access may be limited.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring enough gourdes and US dollars in cash.
  • Check your government travel advisory before booking anything.
