Stroud

Give Stroud one full day for the Saturday farmers' market and a valley walk, or skip it and base in Cheltenham or Gloucester instead.

Stroud sits where five steep valleys meet in the southern Cotswolds, an old textile town of stone mills and weavers' cottages that never got the heritage polish of its neighbours. It is a working town with a strong organic-food and alternative streak, best known for a Saturday farmers' market that draws people from across Gloucestershire. The town itself fills half a day; the walking in the surrounding valleys fills the rest. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Cheltenham, Gloucester or Cirencester rather than a base, though two nights works if you want the market and a long walk without rushing.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is small and steep; walk it. Buses run about every 30 min between Stroud and Stonehouse on weekdays. For the valleys, villages and commons you want a car, a bike or strong legs — footpaths are the point of the area.

Watch out

Safety

Stroud is a small town and daytime safety is not a concern; the real risks are dark lanes with no footway, muddy descents in the valleys and a thin late-night scene — drinkers often head to Cheltenham instead.
  • Pavements and lanes are steep; some village roads have no footway, so walk facing traffic.
  • Mobile signal drops in the valleys; download maps before you set out.
  • Paths are muddy from autumn to spring — boots, not trainers.
  • Town-centre car parks are cheap; the privately run multi-storey has drawn local complaints about enforcement, so read the signs.
