Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Óbidos is a walled hill town of about 12,000 people in the Oeste, roughly 85 km north of Lisbon. The whole historic centre sits inside the medieval walls, so you can walk it in two to four hours. Staying one night buys you the empty streets after the coaches leave; a day-trip buys you the same sights with crowds.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The sights sit inside or beside the walls and the lanes are cobbled and steep in places. Buses from Óbidos town to the surrounding villages run about once a week per route, so treat them as a local service, not a tourist one. A car helps for the coast and the golf resorts.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Rápida Verde coach or Linha do Oeste train

Market town with the Bordalo Pinheiro museum and ceramics; easy half-day add-on.

Nazaré

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min by car

Coach via Caldas da Rainha, or car on the A8

Beach and the big-wave viewpoint at Praia do Norte; combine with Alcobaça.

Alcobaça

go

Door to door: About 40 min by car

Car on the A8, or coach with a change

The monastery is the reason to come; pair it with Nazaré in one day.

Peniche

go

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car on the A8 and IP6

Fishing port, surf beaches and boats to the Berlengas in season.

Torres Vedras

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Car on the A8, or Linha do Oeste train

Worth it for the Lines of Torres Vedras forts and the old town; not a headline sight.

Lourinhã

caution

Door to door: About 35 min by car

Car on the A8

Dinosaur museum and cliffs; best with a car and a beach stop.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min door to door

Rápida Verde coach from Campo Grande, at least hourly

The coach beats the train from Lisbon: faster and more frequent.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Inside the walls (Rua Direita and around)

Walk to everything, but narrow lanes, no car access and noise from day visitors; book early for the pousada and the converted-convent hotels.

Just outside Porta da Vila

Cheaper rooms, paid parking outside the walls, 5–10 min on foot to the gate.

Golf resorts near Vau and Praia D'El Rey

Car needed; 10–20 min drive to the town, ocean and golf on site.

Watch out

Safety

Óbidos is a small, low-crime tourist town; the real risks are the unrailed wall walk, wet cobbles and pickpockets in the crowded Rua Direita in summer.
  • The wall walk has no handrail and drops on both sides: skip it in rain or wind, and keep hold of children.
  • Cobbles are slippery when wet; wear shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
  • Parking inside the walls is not possible; use the paid car parks outside and walk in.
  • Weekend and summer day-trip crowds peak roughly 11:00–17:00; go early or stay the night.
  • Many small shops and restaurants close one weekday; check before you plan around a specific place.
