Hamburg is a town and village in the Southtowns of Erie County, about 16 km south of Buffalo, with a population of roughly 57,000. Almost nothing here is a destination in itself: people come for the Erie County Fair in August, to dig fossils at Penn Dixie, or to sleep cheaply near I-90 exit 57 and drive into Buffalo. Treat it as a base with two real attractions, and plan around a car.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit 3–8 km apart along US 62, US 20 and NY 5, and buses are thin. Buffalo is 20–30 min north on I-90 or US 62. If you have no car, stay in the village and use rideshare for Penn Dixie and the fairgrounds.

Safety

Hamburg is a Buffalo suburb and feels calm by day and evening. The real risks are winter driving on I-90, unlit roads and pavements outside the village, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car at trailheads or the mall.
  • Lake-effect snow can shut the I-90 stretch between Hamburg and Buffalo for hours in winter: check road conditions before driving.
  • Fair week in mid-August fills every motel on Camp Road and doubles some rates: book months ahead.
  • Penn Dixie is outdoor and seasonal, with limited days in May and October: check the official site before you drive out.
  • The fairgrounds and McKinley Mall areas are car-dependent; pavements are sparse and crossings are long.
