Killaloe is a small County Clare village on the west bank of the Shannon, facing Ballina in County Tipperary across a 13-arch bridge that was pedestrianised in 2025. It was the birthplace of Brian Boru, and the river, the cathedral and the lough do the work here. Most travellers see it in half a day; one night turns it into a proper stop between Limerick and the Clare coast.

Getting around

Walk. The old bridge between Killaloe and Ballina was pedestrianised in 2025 and cars now use a new bridge downstream, so the two villages are one walkable place. Bus Éireann 345 links Limerick with Killaloe, Tuamgraney and Scariff about five times daily (40 min); 323 runs Limerick–Ballina–Nenagh, calling at Killaloe in commuting hours. A car is better for Moylussa, Tuamgraney and Mountshannon.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the narrow signal-controlled bridge, unlit riverbank paths after dark and cold water on the lough. Use 112 or 999 for police, ambulance, fire or coast guard.
  • Bus 323 sometimes calls at Killaloe instead of Ballina: confirm which side you want before boarding.
  • Boat trips and the tourist office run April–September only; outside that, check ahead.
  • Brian Boru's Fort is open parkland but has a litter and bonfire problem: go in daylight.
  • The bridge is narrow and signal-controlled: no stopping for photos, and no two-way passing.
