Thirsk is a small North Yorkshire market town, 23 miles north of York, known for its racecourse and as the home of vet and author James Herriot. Allow half a day for the centre and a full day for nearby sights. The North York Moors begin about five miles east; a car makes exploring them easier. York to Thirsk takes about 15 minutes by train, but the station is 1.5 miles west of the centre.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10 minutes. Thirsk station is 1.5 miles west of Market Place on the A61, with steep steps to the platforms. A dozen taxi firms work the town. For the moors, Sutton Bank and Byland Abbey you need a car; buses are limited.

Safety

Thirsk is a low-crime market town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are unlit moor roads, the steep Sutton Bank descent and fast traffic on the A61 between the station and town.
  • Caravans and heavy vehicles are banned on Sutton Bank, the steep A170 scarp road east of town.
  • Thirsk station is 1.5 miles from the centre with steep platform steps: allow 25–30 min to walk or book a taxi.
  • Coming by road from the south, use the A1(M) then A168; the York ring road is often congested.
  • Race days fill the town's beds and pubs: book ahead if your dates clash.
