Lossiemouth is a small Moray coast town of about 7,900 people, built on a fishing harbour and now best known for its long sandy East Beach, two golf courses and the RAF base on its edge. It has no railway station: you arrive via Elgin, 20 minutes by bus. Most travellers use it as a single-night stop or a half-day from Elgin, and a car or bike opens up Duffus Castle, Hopeman and Burghead.

Getting around

The town itself is walkable: harbour to East Beach is about 15 minutes on foot. Stagecoach bus 33 links Lossiemouth and Elgin every 30 min Mon–Sat and hourly on Sunday, 20 min direct (33A) or 40 min via the RAF base (33C). Bus 32 serves Duffus, Hopeman and Burghead from Elgin but does not run from Lossiemouth, so a car or a hired bike is the practical way to see the coast. Outfit Moray on Shore St hires bikes.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are cold water and fast-changing coastal weather, dark unlit paths after nightfall, and patchy mobile signal. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No railway station: you change in Elgin to bus 33, and the last bus back is early evening — check the timetable before a late dinner.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from EE and Three, weaker on O2 and Vodafone, and no 5G in the area.
  • The sea is cold year-round and the Moray Firth wind picks up fast; East Beach has no lifeguard cover outside peak periods.
  • RAF Lossiemouth is an active military base with Quick Reaction Alert fighters: do not photograph or approach the perimeter.
  • Several hotels and restaurants close or cut hours from November to March — confirm before booking a winter night.
