Go only if you have booked a boat or guide to Qajartalik: 2 nights, no road in, no rental car, no walk-up tours.
Kangiqsujuaq is a village of about 700 on Wakeham Bay in Nunavik, northern Quebec. There is no road in: you arrive on an Air Inuit flight from Kuujjuaq or Montréal. The reason to come is Qajartalik on Qikertaaluk Island, a soapstone petroglyph site with more than 150 carved faces, reached by boat in open water. Everything else is village life, tundra and fjords, and it is expensive and weather-dependent.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
The village is small enough to walk, including from the airport. There is no rental-car counter and no taxi rank; for anything beyond the village you need a local operator with a boat, quad or snowmobile. Confirm transport with your guide before you book the flight.

Watch out
Safety
- No road access: flights are the only way in, and they are expensive and can be delayed by weather.
- Qajartalik is reached by boat in open water: crossings are weather-dependent and only run in the open-water season.
- Book accommodation and any guide before you book the flight; beds are few and fill with workers and researchers.
- Food and fuel cost far more than in southern Canada; bring what you can and budget high.
- Summer brings mosquitoes and blackflies; pack a head net.
- Do not touch or chalk the petroglyphs; the site is protected and fragile.
