Federal Way is a Seattle suburb of about 89,000 people between Sea-Tac Airport and Tacoma, on the I-5 corridor. The two real draws sit side by side: the Pacific Bonsai Museum and the Rhododendron Species Botanical Gardens. Everything else is malls, chain hotels and parking lots, so most travellers use it as a cheap airport-adjacent bed or a short stop, not a destination.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and malls are spread along I-5 and Pacific Highway (SR-99) with big parking lots between them. Without a car, the Link light rail 1 Line ends at Federal Way Downtown Station, and King County Metro and Pierce Transit buses run from the transit centre to Sea-Tac, Seattle, Tacoma and Puyallup. Local fares are $3 for two hours ($1 seniors 65+, free for youth 0–18).

A low-crime suburb; the real risks are traffic on Pacific Highway, unlit streets after dark and leaving bags visible in a parked car.
  • Distances are car distances: the gardens, the mall and the hotels are not walkable to each other.
  • Wild Waves is seasonal and closes outside summer: check dates before you plan around it.
  • Pacific Highway (SR-99) is a strip of malls and motels with heavy traffic; cross only at signals.
