Bariloche is the Argentine Lakes District hub: a town of 113,000 on Lake Nahuel Huapi, ringed by mountains and national park, 2 h 20 min by air from Buenos Aires. It works as a summer hiking and lake base and as South America's biggest ski centre in winter. Most travellers need three nights; the town itself is small, the outdoors is the point.

Getting around
One bus company (My Bus) runs the urban network; pay with a SUBE card or a contactless bank card. Local routes cost about AR$1,895 and the airport line 72 about AR$5,800 (Dec 2025). Line 20/21/10 serves the Llao Llao and Circuito Chico side, line 50/52 the Catedral and Gutiérrez lake side. Taxis and remises are metered; a car helps for Tronador and the Seven Lakes road.

Safety
- Strong wind makes summer afternoons feel much colder than the temperature suggests; carry a shell.
- Summer nights can drop near freezing — layers, not just shorts.
- Some trails and the Tronador road close with snow or storm; ask at the national park office before setting out.
- Book ski-season beds and Catedral accommodation weeks ahead; July school holidays fill the town.
- Trekking alone on the Frey or López trails is not advised; tell someone your plan.
