Querétaro is a colonial highland city 213 km northwest of Mexico City, capital of its state and a UNESCO World Heritage historic centre. The old town is small and walkable; the city's real pull is as a base for the wine and cheese route, the Peña de Bernal monolith and the Sierra Gorda missions. Two nights covers the centre and one day trip; three nights adds a second.

Getting around

The historic centre is compact and flat: walk it. Uber, Didi and Cabify cover the city. QroBus local buses are extensive; a card costs M$38 and a ride M$11 (Aug 2026). Taxis have no meters — agree the fare before boarding; minimum about M$40.

Watch out

Safety

Querétaro is one of Mexico's calmer big cities and the historic centre is fine on foot by day and evening. The real risks are unmarked taxi fares, afternoon rain in summer and the occasional football crowd: use e-hailing at night and agree taxi prices first.
  • Taxis have no meters and fares can vary by driver: ask the price before you get in.
  • Afternoon and evening rain from June to September; carry a light rain jacket.
  • Altitude is about 1,820 (≈ US$100) m — mild, but sun is strong at midday.
  • Querétaro FC home games have a history of fan violence; if you go, expect ID registration via FanID and check current rules.
