Gießen is a university town of about 88,000 people, roughly half of them students, 60 km north of Frankfurt and 45 minutes away by train. The medieval centre was destroyed in the Second World War, so what remains inside the Anlagenring is a handful of buildings — the Altes and Neues Schloss, the theatre, the Stadtkirchenturm — plus a strong science-museum pair and a busy shopping street. It works as a half-day or one-night stop on the way to Marburg, Wetzlar or the Lahn valley, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses run on a dense SWG/RMV network; single rides are cheap and a day ticket pays off after three trips. Nextbike rental bikes are available — registration in the app before you ride. Driving inside the Anlagenring is rarely worth it: one-way streets and pedestrian zones.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-risk student city; the real issues are pickpockets on the Seltersweg and around the station at night, and bikes on shared paths. Standard German city precautions are enough.
  • The historic centre is post-war; do not expect a preserved old town.
  • The Liebig Museum has limited opening during reconstruction after a 2022 fire — check before you go.
  • The Museum für Gießen (formerly Oberhessisches Museum) has been under redevelopment — check whether it is open.
  • Bicycle infrastructure varies street by street; watch for bikes when crossing.
