- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Chile ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Chile's National Migration Service or a Chilean consulate; keep the entry slip or digital record you receive.
- Chile ↗Torres del Paine: campsites and refugios on the W and O treks must be booked in advance, and the park requires an entry ticket bought ahead; check the official park (CONAF) channels.
- Chile ↗Chile strictly controls food imports: declare fruit, meat, dairy, seeds and honey on arrival, or throw them away before customs.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Carry cash: many small towns have no ATM, or ATMs that reject foreign cards.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Torres del Paine campsites and refugios on the W and O circuits must be booked ahead in high season.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Southern Patagonia is often reached overland through Argentina; carry your passport for border crossings.

Pali-Aike is not the Patagonia of granite towers. It is a dry volcanic field of basalt cones, lava flows and low scrub, 150 km northwest of Punta Arenas on the road to the Monte Aymond border. Its value is archaeological: the Fell and Pali-Aike caves held evidence of human occupation dated to roughly 8,000 years ago, found by Junius Bird in the 1930s, and the caves have sat on Chile's UNESCO tentative list since 1998. The park is small, flat and quick to walk; almost everyone sees it as a half-day stop on the way to or from Torres del Paine or the border, not as a destination in itself.

- A basalt field of scoria cones and lava flows that looks nothing like the rest of Chilean Patagonia.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The cave and Laguna Ana are reached by short walks from parking areas, but surfaces are gravel and uneven.
- The lava field is flat but rough and exposed; there are no paved paths or boardwalks.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on existing tracks; the volcanic soil and cave floor scar easily.
- Carry out all rubbish; there are no bins in the park.
- Do not approach or feed wildlife, especially at Laguna Ana.
- Visit outside the December–February peak if you can, and drive a full car to cut fuel per person.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Pali-Aike National Park?
Foreign adults pay roughly CLP 7,000–10,000 (2026 estimate); children less. Chilean residents pay lower rates. Fees are collected at the CONAF ranger post at the entrance and can change — check current rates before you drive out.
What are the best hikes in Pali-Aike National Park?
There are no long trails. The usual combination is the short walk to Cueva Pali-Aike, the flat lava-field circuit, the Laguna Ana wildlife stop and the Morada del Diablo crater — about 2–3 hours in total by car and on foot.
When is the best time to visit Pali-Aike National Park?
November to March: long daylight, drier tracks and the mildest temperatures. October and April are workable but windier and colder. June and July are midwinter, with snow and unreliable access.
Do I need a car to visit Pali-Aike?
Yes, in practice. There is no public transport to the gate. Most visitors drive from Punta Arenas on Route 255, about 2–2.5 hours each way, or stop on the way to the Monte Aymond border.
Can I camp or sleep inside Pali-Aike National Park?
No. There is no camping and the park closes in the evening, so plan to return to Punta Arenas or stay at a rural estancia near Punta Delgada.
Is Pali-Aike worth visiting?
If you are already driving Route 255 with a car and have a spare half-day, yes: the cave and the lava field are unlike the rest of Chilean Patagonia. If you have no vehicle or only one day around Punta Arenas, spend it on the Strait of Magellan and the penguin colonies instead.
