Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is the island capital and a UNESCO-listed old town: two Venetian fortresses, the Spianada esplanade, the Liston arcades and the church of St Spyridon. It works as a 1–2 night stop on arrival or departure, or as a base for day trips south to Achilleion and Mon Repos. Most visitors come April–October; the town itself is busiest in July and August.

Getting around

The old town is compact and best on foot; the Spianada to the Old Fortress is under 10 minutes. City buses (Corfu City Bus) link the centre, Saroko Square, the port and the airport; line 15 serves the airport. Taxis queue at the Spianada, Methodiou Street, the Old Port and the New Port. Renting a car or scooter helps for the island's beaches but parking in the old town is hard.

Watch out

Safety

Corfu Town is generally safe for tourists; the real issues are pickpocketing in crowds, taxi fare disputes and summer heat. Keep bags zipped on the Spianada and in the old lanes, and agree taxi fares first.
  • Taxis may quote a flat price to tourists: ask for the meter or agree the fare before you get in.
  • Some drivers merge separate groups into one shared trip without asking.
  • Old town streets are narrow and uneven; luggage on wheels is awkward.
  • Summer heat and crowded ferries in July–August; book crossings ahead.
  • Check opening hours for the fortresses and museums, which change by season.
