Ponta Grossa is a 306,000-person industrial city in the Campos Gerais, 120 km west of Curitiba. Travellers come for the sandstone formations of Vila Velha State Park and the caves and canyons around Itaiacoca, not for the city itself. It works as a one-night stop on the Curitiba–Iguaçu road, or as a day trip if you have a car.

Getting around

The city is spread out and the natural sights are 15–26 km away on rural roads, so a car is the practical choice. In town, local buses and ride-hailing cover the centre; taxis are metered. Vila Velha sits on BR-376 at km 515, reachable by car or on organised tours from Curitiba and Ponta Grossa.

Watch out

Safety

Ponta Grossa is a working city, not a resort: use normal Brazilian city caution after dark in the centre, keep to lit streets, and take ride-hailing rather than walking long distances at night. The bigger practical risk is rural roads and weather on the trail days.
  • Vila Velha and the Itaiacoca trails are outdoor sites: heavy rain closes or muddies paths, so check conditions the day before.
  • The Itaiacoca sights (Buraco do Padre, Mariquinha, Rio São Jorge) sit on dirt roads with limited signage; a car or a guided tour is safer than a bus.
  • Some parks charge per area rather than one ticket, and prices change: confirm at the gate.
  • Münchenfest runs for about 10 days in November–December and fills hotels; book ahead if your dates overlap.
