Chaves is a small border city in Trás-os-Montes, 10 km from Spain, built around a Roman bridge and hot springs. The historic centre is compact and walkable in half a day, so most travellers pass through on the way to or from Galicia rather than stay a week. There is no train station: you arrive by bus or car.

Getting around

The centre is flat enough to cover on foot: bridge, castle keep, Praça de Camões and the riverside paths sit within about 15 minutes of each other. Local buses are limited and infrequent; taxis are cheap for short hops. A car is only worth it for the forts, the rural quintas and the Spanish border.

Safety

Chaves is a calm, low-crime small city; the real risks are summer heat, unlit border roads at night and mountain weather that turns fast.
  • No train service: buses from Porto and Lisbon are the only public transport, and some run once or twice a day — book ahead.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35 °C+; do the castle and bridge before 11:00 or after 18:00.
  • Winter is windy and wet, with mountain weather changing fast; bring a jacket and umbrella.
  • Many small restaurants close one day a week and shut the kitchen early; check before walking out.
  • Border roads into Galicia are quiet and poorly lit at night; drive them in daylight.
