Lake Wales is a small city on the Lake Wales Ridge in eastern Polk County, Florida, about an hour from Orlando and 90 minutes from Tampa. It is known for Bok Tower Gardens and its Singing Tower, a 1920s downtown, and the scrub and lake country east of town. A car is close to essential: sights sit several miles apart along US 27 and SR 60.

Getting around

Drive. US 27 runs north–south through town and SR 60 east–west; the nature parks east of town are 8–15 mi (13–24 km) out and have no bus service. Winter Haven Area Transit Route 35 is the only bus through town, from Eagle Ridge Mall south to downtown and on to Babson Park and Frostproof; fares are low but service is infrequent. Taxis serve all of Polk County.

Safety

Low street crime for a US small city; the real risks are summer heat and lightning, alligators near any water, and long unlit rural roads at night. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
