Desaru is a 22 km stretch of resort coast in Johor's Kota Tinggi district, about 30 minutes by expressway from Johor Bahru and the closest beach to it. The sand is grey and the water often murky, so the draw is the resort strip, the waterpark and golf, not the sea itself. Bandar Penawar, 2 km inland, is the transport and shopping hub. There is no public transport and no Grab in the area, so a car or hotel transfers decide your trip.

Getting around

There is no public transport in Desaru and Grab does not operate in the area, so plan on a rental car, hotel transfers or taxis arranged through your hotel or a restaurant. Bandar Penawar is the hub: minibuses run to the resort area roughly every 30 min for about RM1, and taxis from Bandar Penawar cost about RM10. A car rental office operates in Taman Desaru Utama, Bandar Penawar.

Inland town 2 km from the beach: bus and taxi terminal, SKS City Mall, food court, cheaper hotels; you need a car or taxi to reach the sand.

Tanjung Balau

Fishing village north-east of the resort strip with a beach, a food court, a fishermen's museum and a small resort; quieter, fewer services.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are monsoon surf and rip currents, no public transport or Grab after dark, and long distances to hospital care. Swim near other people, keep a taxi number saved, and do not walk the expressway shoulder.
  • No Grab and no public transport: book transfers or a rental car before you arrive, or you will be stuck.
  • Nov–Feb brings monsoon winds, high waves and more rain; swimming and boat trips can be cancelled.
  • The public beach has basic toilets and a car park fee (RM8 car, RM4 motorbike); resort-front sand is open to all but facilities are not.
  • Firefly and island trips run on weather and moon phase; confirm on the day rather than booking far ahead.
  • Bandar Penawar is a small town: many shops and eateries close early, and the nearest hospital care is in Kota Tinggi or Johor Bahru.
