Hulls Cove
Half a day: enter Acadia National Park via the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, walk a carriage road, then move on to Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor. Not a base.
Hulls Cove is a small village on Mount Desert Island that serves as the main gateway to Acadia National Park. Its Visitor Center is the best place to start a park visit, and the village has a general store and a few seasonal restaurants. Most travellers use it as a quick stop before heading to Bar Harbor or deeper into the park.
