Badagry is the second-largest town in Lagos State, about 55 km west of Lagos on the road to the Benin border at Seme. It was a major slave port from the 1500s to the 1800s and the place where Christianity and Western schooling first took root in Nigeria. The sights are a compact cluster on and near Marina Road, plus Gberefu island offshore. Most travellers do it as a long day trip from Lagos; the beaches west of town are the reason to stay a night.

Getting around

From Lagos, take a bus to Mile 2, then a Badagry-bound bus (about ₦1,000–1,500). In town, keke napep and okada cover short hops; the Marina Road sights are walkable from each other. Gberefu island needs a boat from the Marina waterfront. Uber and Bolt may refuse the beach roads.

Watch out

Safety

Badagry itself is a quiet town and the Marina sights are fine in daylight. The real risks are the expressway drive, rough beach roads, and being on the water or the sand after dark: go with a local guide, keep to daylight, and don't carry more cash than you need.
  • The beach access roads are rough and can be impassable after heavy rain; agree the fare and the return before you set off.
  • Suntan Beach has broken glass on parts of the sand: keep shoes on.
  • Boat trips to Gberefu island depend on the tide and the operator; confirm the price and the return time before boarding.
  • Museum opening hours vary and some sites close without notice; call ahead where a number is listed.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Lagos State and the Seme border area before you go.
