Big BendBig Bend, California

Skip Big Bend unless you have a 4WD, a tent, your own food and a serious reason to fish the Pit River: zero services, no restaurants, no motels.

Big Bend is a tiny unincorporated community on the Pit River in Shasta County, with a population of about 100. There are no restaurants, no motels, no RV sites and no shops. The only reason to go is trout fishing on a challenging stretch of the Pit River, and you must be self-sufficient with a car, tent and all supplies. Most travellers should skip it or treat it as a half-day stop on a drive from Redding to Burney.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Watch out

Safety

Big Bend is extremely remote with no services. The main risks are lack of cell service, rough roads, cold water in the Pit River and isolation. Carry a first-aid kit, extra food and water, and tell someone your plans.
  • No restaurants, no stores, no gas stations: bring all food, water and fuel.
  • No motels or RV sites: you must camp with a tent.
  • Pit River fishing is physically demanding; only attempt if you are fit.
  • Cell service is unreliable; download offline maps.
  • Road conditions on Big Bend Road can be rough; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
