Sechelt sits on the lower Sunshine Coast, about 50 km northwest of Vancouver but reached by a 40-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay and a 25-minute drive from Langdale. It is a small town of roughly 10,000 with 35 km of shoreline, an inlet side and a strait side, and it works best as a slow two- to three-night stop rather than a day trip. Bring or rent a car if you want the trailheads, Skookumchuck Narrows and the northern beaches; without one you are limited to the village, Porpoise Bay and the bus to Gibsons.

Getting around

BC Transit Sunshine Coast runs local routes and links Sechelt with Gibsons and the Langdale ferry terminal; route 90 is the faster of the two, about 40–45 min to the terminal. Taxis (Coast Taxi, Sunshine Coast Taxi) and a local ride-hailing option cover short hops. A car or bike is the practical way to reach trailheads, Skookumchuck Narrows and the beaches north of town.

Watch out

Safety

Sechelt is a low-crime small town and safe for tourists. The real risks are coastal: cold water, fast tidal currents at Skookumchuck Narrows, and rain-slick trails and highways.
  • The ferry from Horseshoe Bay is the only road link to the lower coast: book summer sailings and allow a full buffer.
  • Cell and data coverage is patchy on Highway 101 north of town and around the inlet.
  • Winter storms bring power outages and closed trails; check BC Parks and the district site before you go.
  • Some restaurants close two days a week and shut by mid-afternoon: check hours the same day.
