  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Massillon is a small Ohio city on the Tuscarawas River, 20 minutes west of Canton, known for high-school football and for the museum and theatre on Lincoln Way. It is a half-day or one-night stop inside a Canton-area trip, not a destination on its own. Two nights is the practical maximum unless you are here for a game or a bike ride on the towpath.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

SARTA runs regional buses from Canton and around Stark County, but frequencies are low and stops are spread out. A car is the practical choice: US-30 and SR-21 meet here, downtown parking is free or cheap, and the towpath and Sippo Valley Trail are the only good car-free options.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Car via US-30 east, about 20 min; SARTA bus also runs the corridor

Pro Football Hall of Fame and a bigger downtown; the obvious half-day pairing with Massillon.

North Canton

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Car via I-77 north, about 25 min

Shopping and chain dining; useful if you need a bigger hotel choice.

Alliance, Ohio

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via US-62 east, about 35 min

Small downtown and a college campus; go only if you have a specific reason.

Hartville

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via SR-21 north and US-62, about 35 min

Market and flea-market days are the draw; check which days it opens.

Louisville, Ohio

skip

Door to door: About 25 min

Car via SR-21 north, about 20 min

Nothing here that Massillon or Canton does not already cover.

Carrollton, Ohio

caution

Door to door: About 50 min

Car via SR-21 south and SR-43, about 40 min

Rural county seat; pair it with a drive, not as a standalone trip.

Dellroy

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via SR-21 south and SR-542, about 45 min

Atwood Lake area; worth it in summer for water and boating.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Lincoln Way downtown

Walk to the museum, theatre and most restaurants; the Hampton Inn on 1st St SW is the only full-service hotel in the centre.

US-30 and SR-21 corridor

Chain motels and free parking; you need a car for everything.

Baylor Beach Park, Navarre

Campground about 15 min south; seasonal, so check dates before booking.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small city; the real issues are empty downtown streets after dark, winter ice and deer on US-30 at dusk. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Downtown empties after about 21:00; check restaurant closing times before you walk over.
  • Football Fridays in autumn fill the roads around Paul Brown Tiger Stadium — arrive early or park away and walk.
  • Winter ice on pavements and river trails; the towpath can flood after heavy rain.
  • Some listings and venues change hours seasonally: check the official site before a special trip.
