Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Dortmund is the largest city in the Ruhr and the region's transport hub, with 600 trains a day through the Hauptbahnhof. The centre is small enough to walk end to end, but the sights that matter — the U-Tower, Kokerei Hansa, Westfalenpark, the stadium — sit outside it. Most travellers use Dortmund as a base for the Ruhr and give the city itself one day, two if a match or a concert is on.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The Stadtbahn (metro-style trams) runs in three tunnels under the centre, crossing at Kampstraße, Reinoldikirche and Stadtgarten; the Hauptbahnhof has its own underground stop. A single trip inside the city is a VRR level A ticket, about €3.60 (2026 estimate); day tickets use the same A–C levels. Buses run roughly 05:00–23:00, with night buses early on Saturday and Sunday. The centre itself is small enough to walk between both ends.

Little for a visitor beyond the LWL Museum; skip unless a specific exhibition is on.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Innenstadt / Hauptbahnhof)

Walkable to Alter Markt, Westenhellweg shopping and all three Stadtbahn tunnels; best for one or two nights with bags.

Kreuzviertel

Quiet 19th-century streets, cafés and bars, 10–15 min walk or one U-Bahn stop from the centre; good for a longer stay.

Hörde

South of the centre by the Phoenix See, U41 to the centre in about 10 min; cheaper rooms, calmer evenings.

Watch out

Safety

Dortmund is a normal German big city; the centre is fine on foot by day and busy at night. Watch your bag on the U-Bahn at match times and around the Hauptbahnhof, and avoid unlit stretches of the Nordstadt after dark.
  • Stamp your ticket before boarding. An unstamped ticket is invalid and the on-the-spot fine is about €40 (≈ US$50), with no language excuse accepted.
  • The city centre is a low-emission zone: cars need a pollution-category sticker.
  • Match days: U42 and the Stadion stop are packed; extra trams run from Stadion.
  • The airport has no train or tram link — allow for the shuttle or the 490 bus plus U47.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Dortmund. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (grey, wet, 5 °C) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 7 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for DTM: shuttle and 490/U47 timings field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Hauptbahnhof and Innenstadt, Kreuzviertel, Hörde and Phoenix See, Huckarde and Kokerei Hansa.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Dortmunder U, Kokerei Hansa, Westfalenpark, Signal Iduna Park) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Match-day and hostile-arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
